Those relentless road warriors Widespread Panic have brought the fruits of their 18 years of tireless labors to bear in their third live album, Live in the Classic City. Recorded in 2000 over a three-night stand in their hometown of Athens, Georgia--which proudly bears the moniker of Classic City--this thinking-man's jam band provides something for everybody as they move through a funky R&B groove and pay obeisance to the existential jazz of Sun Ra's search for the "outer nothingness" before coming back to earth to worship at the altar of their classic-rock forebears and evoking the restless spirits of the Doors, the gravity of Deep Purple, and the whimsy of the midcareer Who, all channeled through John Bell's shape-shifting voice. But Bell's voice isn't the only thing that transmogrifies through the 27 tracks collected here; these sons of Georgia not only drink deeply from the rock canon, they also conjure the same majesty that inflamed the Allman Brothers, locating a similar loose-limbed groove that makes all their guitar pyrotechnics, deep percussions, and inspired keyboard fills seem effortless, as if guided by a collective ESP. It's a grand representation of one of the most exciting live bands working today. Special guests include former R.E.M. skinbeater Bill Berry, Rolling Stones' keyboardist Chuck Leavell, Randall Bramlett, and the Allman Brothers' Derek Trucks. --  Jaan Uhelszki

Product DescriptionWith the release of their 10th studio album, Widespread Panic continues their 22 year tradition of creating music that stays true to its foundation while relentlessly evolving with each album, song and note played on the stage. While this is 17th release in the Widespread Panic catalogue, it still manages to offer fans a number of firsts. Unlike previous albums where tracks were 'road-tested' on stage before being laid down in the studio, Free Somehow offers a majority of songs that have yet to make their live debut. This is also the band's first recording with legendary guitarist Jimmy Herring. Widespread Panic recorded Free Some How with producer Terry Manning (Led Zeppelin, Lenny Kravitz, ZZ Top, Al Green) at his renowned Compass Point Studios. Dave Schools hears a bit of Zep in what the band has laid down, commenting, 'Some of the songs really strike me as something you might have heard on Physical Graffiti. They're complex, beautiful, deep, and it rocks. And its got some melancholy and a lot of color.'

Filmed in Widespread Panic's hometown of Athens, Georgia, Panic in the Streets is evidence for the good people at Guinness to ponder as they try to verify the band's claim of hosting the "world's biggest CD release party," with up to 100,000 Spreadheads in attendance. Who knew that they kept track of such things? For that matter, who knew that Athens had a mayor (who introduces the group) with the wonderfully weird name of Gwen O'Looney? Such items of esoterica are the primary draw for this video, which is a companion of sorts to WSP's 1998 live album, Light Fuse Get Away. After all, the band members aren't that much to look at (sorry, guys), and the video snippets inserted during the songs--shots of Athens street life, dogs running, water, a train--don't add much conceptually to the proceedings. The band sure can play, though, and some of the songs included on the video were not on the Light Fuse album, so it's a must for completists. The bonuses are cool, too. The tape includes the Billy Bob Thornton-directed video of "Aunt Avis" (featuring Vic Chesnutt and Laura Dern), and there's also a bonus CD with versions of "Tall Boy," "Aunt Avis," "Fishwater," and "Chilly Water." --   Daniel Durchholz
