The late great John Peel was the champion of the obscure and unheard. The DJ that, for decades, introduced generations of teenagers to new music and gave hundreds of bands their first mainstream broadcast and whose In Session recording are the stuff of legend and spawned an entire series of their own.
Astonishingly, it's 5 years since his passing and a new generation has grown up not knowing what it was like listening to a DJ who would play Bloc Party and then Ivor Cutler, Yeah Yeah Yeah's and then Bong-Ra, Linton Kwesi Johnson and then The Misunderstood. Universal Music, with the full approval of John's family have taken on the unenviable task of trying to recreate one of John's shows.
This lavishly packaged hard back book style 4CD set contains singles and Peel session recordings by some of John's favourite artists -- the big players and the one hit wonders, the chart toppers and chart bottomers.
Disc 1 highlights include The Misunderstood, the only band John managed and the band that performed one of his all time favourite gig; "If I had to list the ten greatest performances I've seen in my life, one would be The Misunderstood at Pandora's Box, Hollywood, 1966. My god, they were a great band!" and the recently discovered Peel Session version of Free's "Walk In My Shadow", long thought of as destroyed after its first broadcast. This is one of 4 unreleased versions on this disc, the others are by John Cale, Medicine Head and the Boomtown Rats. Alongside many long deleted rareities.
Disc 2's highlight has to be John's only appearance on record, singing backing vocals to Altered Image's "Song Sung Blue". It sits alongside unreleased recordings by Elvis Costello, The Cure, Linton Kwesi Johnson, Julian Cope and Soundgarden.
Disc 3 features unreleased recordings by Hole, Thievery Corporation, Marxman, Tiger and Justin Berkovi.
Disc 4 has 9 unreleased recordings by Bloc Party, Mercury Rev, And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead, Bong Ra, The Datsuns, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Hellacopters, Soledad Brothers and Your Code Name Is Milo.
The artwork features rare and unseen photos alongside recollections from some of the biggest and smallest artists to appear on John's show. Artists such as Jarvis Cocker, Block Party and Mercury Rev all contributed.
Kats Karavan é um esplêndido de 4 CD set traçar a história da mostra iconoclasta John Peel's abrangendo 5 décadas a partir da década de 1960 até sua morte, triste e prematura em 2004. Campeão do obscuro e desconhecido, ele introduziu gerações inteiras de adolescentes a nova música e deu centenas de bandas mainstream suas emissões em primeiro lugar.
Incrivelmente, 5 anos já se passaram desde a morte de João e toda uma nova geração já está crescendo sem saber o que ela gosta de ouvir um DJ que iria jogar Bloc Party, seguido por Ivor Cutler, o Yeah Yeah Yeahs, em seguida, Bong-Ra, Linton Kwesi Johnson seguido por The Misunderstood. Universal Music, com a plena aprovação da família de João, levou a cabo a difícil tarefa de tentar recriar um dos shows de João nesta 4-CD box set.
Foi um desafio gigantesco e difícil. Como alguém poderia caber gerações de ouvintes sessões dos utilizadores, individuais ou anedotas em 4 discos? Não há Undertones, no Joy Division, não Chameleons, para citar apenas três favoritos Peel, que não aparecem aqui, mas todos já apareceram extensivamente em compilações anteriores Peel. Então, de grande alcance e eclética era a paixão de John para a música que esta compilação poderia ter sido feito mais de dez vezes sem nem mesmo tocar nos lados de seus shows.
Desenho direito material, até a última John nunca Festive Fifty, Kats Karavan inclui grandes jogadores, one-hit wonders, toppers da carta e aqueles que permaneceram no curso inferior. Inclui faixas dos gostos de Small Faces, Thin Lizzy, Aswad, The Damned, Medicine Head, The Jam, The Slits, Funboy Five, The Cure, Linton Kwesi Johnson, That Petrol Emotion, Extreme Noise Terror, Ivor Cutler, Mercury Rev , Milo, Bloc Party e muitos, muitos mais.
O conjunto também inclui algumas raridades e curiosidades. A faixa livre, Walk In My Shadow, era considerado "perdido" pela BBC até que foi descoberto recentemente em alguns anos as fitas bobina carretel. Esta é a primeira vez que foi sempre disponíveis e pela primeira vez, ele foi ouvido desde a emissão original.

John suprimentos backing vocals na faixa Altered Images, o cover de Neil Diamond's Song Sung Blue, sua única aparição no registro.
Para melhor recriar o espírito e humor de um dos shows de John , alguns clipes de ligações de John aparecem de vez em quando. Nenhum de seus 'chat' foi mantido pela BBC para a gravadora utilizados extratos de melhor do que eles foram capazes de encontrar em fitas cassete velho, limpando-os para o conjunto de CDs, onde trabalham com grande efeito.
Kats Karavan vem completo com obras de arte com fotografias raras e inéditas ao lado de lembranças pessoais de muitos dos artistas de renome, que estavam muito contentes por contribuir e participar nesta homenagem ao falecido, grande John Peel.
