A banda começou a vida em 1969 como "St. James". Fortemente influenciada pelo movimento britânica de rock progressivo da época, a banda começou a escrever material que acabaria por aparecer no primeiro álbum. Eles também começaram um rigoroso cronograma de shows em clubes de apoio durante todo o Midwest, afiando seus show e trabalhando em material original com covers. Apesar do relativo sucesso, e lançamento de um (agora raro), único, algo mais era necessário. Cinco anos e um nome e algumas mudanças de line-up mais tarde, Starcastle nasceu. O trabalho começou na banda do primeiro auto-intitulado LP e foi lançado no início de 1976. A resposta para a música de Starcastle foi positiva e, apesar das acusações alguns detratores ", que soaram como um clone Sim, o álbum recebeu airplay pesado FM em todo os E.U. e Canadá. O grupo iniciou uma agenda de shows ainda mais intenso, incluindo alguns dos maiores shows de sua carreira. O primeiro álbum vendeu bem, e Epic enviado a banda Le Studio em Morin Heights, Quebec, com o produtor Roy Thomas Baker.
Apesar de Roy era conhecido por seu sucesso com o Queen, a banda não tinha certeza se seria uma boa opção ou não. A atmosfera e os arredores do Le Studio foi idílica, mas o produto final, Fontes de Luz, acabou por ser algo diferente do que a banda imaginava. Mais digressões seguiram-se desta vez incluindo um número de alguns shows em salas pequenas e universidades, com Journey e Foreigner apoio Starcastle em algumas datas. Fontes de Luz, a banda ganhou aclamação da crítica e, enquanto o single "Song Diamond (Deep é a luz)" falhou ao gráfico, o álbum vendeu consideravelmente.
Apesar de problemas com o estilo de Roy Baker, o rótulo Starcastle enviado à Inglaterra para gravar a sua oferta de terceiros, Citadel, com Baker, uma vez mais a utilização da produção. A banda estava sob pressão no momento de sua gravadora de rock mais comercial, mas manteve Starcastle às suas raízes do rock progressivo. Depois de mais turnês, as rachaduras na banda estavam começando a aparecer. Real para Reel foi um álbum a banda sentiu que nunca deveria ter sido liberado, por causa de seu som pop-like e recepção decepcionado com os fãs. A maioria dos mais "progressistas" demos feito para o registro, foram rejeitadas pela CBS, ea banda tinha parado de acreditar no que estavam fazendo. O álbum foi lançado e caiu apartamento. Durante a turnê, o tecladista Herb Schildt decidiu que era hora de deixar de exercer a sua paixão - os computadores, e Terry, que tinha os olhos sobre a produção, para a esquerda após a data final do grupo da turnê com o Aerosmith. Isso, juntamente com os números decepcionantes de vendas, CBS levou a cair Starcastle de sua lista.
